ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry is reading out the verdict of the Karachi suo moto case saying Islam is the religion of peace and it is the responsibility of the state to protect the fundamental rights of people.
The verdict is very lengthy and the complete decision would be available on the Supreme Court website. The CJ said that some political elements took benefit of the volatile situation in Karachi adding that according to some media reports certain groups are involved in targeted killings. IG Sindh reported that 306 people were killed in incidents of violence, CJ said. The SC had reserved the judgment in Karachi suo moto case No16 of 2011 and Constitution petition Nos. 60 and 61 of 2011 (regarding law and order situation in Karachi) on September 16th. The Court informed all the concerned persons including the counsel for parties, Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Ms Asma Jehangir, President of the Sindh High Court Bar Association Anwar Mansoor, Sindh Advocate General Fateh Malik, the Prosecutor General and Inspector General of Police, Sindh, that the judgment would be announced on Thursday. The Chief Justice had taken suo moto notice on incidents of relentless killing of innocent people in Karachi by constituting a five-judge special bench on August 5.
