GLOBAL – Russian team will venture out the next week to research about the only all-white whale and named it Iceberg.
The research team which will include researchers from the universities of Moscow and St Petersburg recognized a white whale with eminent fin of about 2 meters close to the Commander Islands in the North Pacific in August 2010. This white whale lives in a group of around 12 family members and is expected 16 years old. Erich Hoyt, co-director of the Far East Russia Orca Project (FEROP), said, “This is the first time we have ever seen an all-white, mature male orca. It is a breathtakingly beautiful animal. We have been looking for him ever since”. The iceberg can travel thousands of kilometer. The scientist will try to find out whether the whale is albino or not. Hoyt said, “We want to find out a lot more about Iceberg. We would like to find out how he is able to survive as a white whale.”
